Why were VHS tapes so expensive in their time?

I bought a copy of "Fletch Lives" the other day from the local thrift store and on the bottom of the VHS case there was a price tag that said the price (original I assume) was $89.95. The case the movie was in also, I assume, was not the original (movie rental clear plastic looking). Were VHS movies really this expensive back in the day?
